Originally part of the 17.2 ac Dobbins' Estate, the property was built in 1910 as the companion carriage house to the Marston & Van Pelt designed O'Melveny estate at 1210 Chelten Way and was completely remodeled by the current owners in 2008. Conscious of the significance of the architecture, the classic Georgian exterior was left virtually unchanged, while the interior was almost completely gutted and rebuilt. Downstairs, the Powder Room was reconfigured and a new floor and plumbing and light fixtures were added. Virtually all of the downstairs flooring was replaced with hand-scraped oak flooring and the massive Living Room fireplace received a new hearth and mantle. The kitchen was updated with new flooring and appliances, including: SubZero refrigerator and 6-burner Thermador cooktop. Upstairs, the floorplan was updated for modern conveniences: expanding the Primary Bedroom and closet, and adding new full-size Laundry Room and Primary and Secondary bathrooms. Mechanically, the house received new HVAC, Lutron lighting system, and upgraded security and high-resolution camera monitoring systems; all of which can be controlled remotely.Outside, complementing the original landscape plan, which was reported to have been designed by famed architect Garrett Eckbo, regarded by many as the father of modern landscape architecture, a new 2-car garage with workshop and open area (currently gym, storage) was built. New smart irrigation, LED lighting and front brick pilasters and electronic gates were added along with hand-built wrought iron gates and fencing designed to match the diamond pattern of the house's classic, original windows and balcony balusters. All work that was required to be permitted and inspected by the City of South Pasadena was done in accordance with its mandates and applicable building codes at the time the work was performed.Significant in its architecture as well as owner pedigree, the Dobbins-Banks House is a rare opportunity to become part of a select, exclusive community a short distance from downtown LA and the studios of Burbank.
